Private Label Activewear: How to Launch Your Fitness Brand

October 3, 2026

Walk into any gym and you’ll see dozens of activewear brands — but only a fraction of them own factories. The rest use private label activewear manufacturing: a factory produces garments to the brand’s specs, with the brand’s labels, packaging, and designs. The brand owns the customer relationship; the factory owns the production expertise.

If you’re considering launching (or expanding) a fitness brand this way, here’s how private label actually works — the models, the costs, the pitfalls, and how to choose a partner.

What “Private Label” Means in Practice

Private label sits between two other models:

  • Wholesale/blank: you buy generic garments and resell them — no customization, no brand differentiation
  • Private label: the factory manufactures to your specs — your designs, fabrics, colors, labels, packaging. The product is yours; you just don’t own the sewing machines.
  • Full vertical: you own design and manufacturing — maximum control, massive capital requirement

For 95% of new fitness brands, private label is the rational choice. You get custom product without factory overhead, and you can scale production up or down with demand.

What You Can Customize Under Private Label

More than most founders expect:

  • Design and pattern: your silhouettes, your grading, your fit blocks — not the factory’s catalog
  • Fabrics: composition, weight, colors, and finishes to your spec (see our fabric guide)
  • Branding: woven neck labels, printed tags, hang tags, custom packaging — your brand, everywhere
  • Decoration: sublimated prints, embroidery, reflective details, custom drawstrings and trims
  • Packaging: individual polybags with size stickers, custom boxes, tissue and stickers for DTC unboxing

The result is indistinguishable from vertically-produced product to your customer — because from their perspective, it is your product.

The Private Label Process: Step by Step

  1. Product definition: you bring tech packs, reference garments, or even just detailed descriptions — a good factory helps refine them
  2. Fabric and trim sourcing: the factory sources to your spec and sends swatches for approval
  3. Sampling: proto → revisions → pre-production sample. Budget 3–5 weeks including shipping.
  4. Branding materials: woven labels and hang tags are produced (often by specialist suppliers coordinated by the factory)
  5. Bulk production: 2–4 weeks after PP approval at typical MOQs
  6. QC, packing, shipping: AQL inspection, branded packaging, export documentation

Costs: What Private Label Really Costs

Honest numbers for planning (indicative ranges — your specs determine your quote):

  • Sampling: a real cost, often partially credited against your bulk order. Budget for 2–3 rounds.
  • Unit costs: driven by fabric, construction complexity, and decoration. A basic legging and a sublimated compression top are different products with different costs — get itemized quotes.
  • Labels and packaging: woven labels have their own mini-MOQs (often 500–1000 pieces); factor this into your first order.
  • Molds and screens: embroidery digitizing and screen setup are one-time costs amortized over the run.

The key discipline: compare landed cost per unit (factory price + freight + duties), not just the factory’s unit price. A slightly higher unit price from a reliable factory beats a cheap quote that arrives late or wrong.

MOQs for Private Label Activewear

Private label MOQs reflect the customization involved. Our standard is 50 pieces per style — set deliberately so new brands can launch a tight assortment (say, leggings + bras + tees) without drowning in inventory. (How MOQs work in detail: our MOQ explainer.)

Plan your launch assortment around the MOQ, not the other way round: 3 styles × 50 pieces in focused colorways beats 10 styles you can’t afford to produce properly.

Choosing a Private Label Partner: The Vetting List

  • Activewear-specific experience: leggings construction (flatlock seaming, gussets, waistband engineering) is a specialization — a team-uniform factory without it will struggle
  • In-house capabilities: cutting, stitching, sublimation, and embroidery under one roof (or tightly managed)
  • Label and packaging handling: confirm they manage woven labels, hang tags, and custom packing — not all factories do
  • Fit expertise: ask how they validate grading — on fit models, mannequins, or just paper patterns?
  • Communication: 24-hour quote turnaround and a direct channel (we’re on WhatsApp at +92 300 9552806)
  • References: not brand names (confidentiality is normal), but product types they’ve produced and photos of their work

Common Private Label Mistakes

  • Copying a competitor’s product stitch-for-stitch: besides the IP issues, you inherit fit problems you don’t understand. Develop your own blocks.
  • Skipping wear-testing: wash and work out in your samples for two weeks before approving bulk. Waistbands roll, seams chafe, colors bleed — find out now.
  • Under-ordering labels: woven label MOQs often exceed garment MOQs — order labels for your next run too.
  • No reorder plan: your bestseller will sell out. Have the reorder conversation with your factory before launch, not after.

Private Label vs White Label: Know the Difference

You’ll hear both terms. White label typically means the factory’s existing designs with your logo added — faster and cheaper, but zero differentiation. Private label means your designs, your specs, your product. If a “private label” supplier only offers catalog styles with logo swaps, they’re selling white label. Price and lead times will reflect the difference — make sure you know which you’re buying.
